Have
for your neighbor a heart of charity and a perennial fountain of
affection and sweetness; with holy zeal, try to help him in everything,
but do always so to please the Lord. Examine the motive of your actions
to discover the snares of vanity and self-love. Refer to God alone all
the good you do; if you keep a good deed hidden and secret, known only
to God, it will reap a priceless profit. If by your negligence men know
it, it will lose almost all its value, as does a good fruit which the
birds have started to eat.
